The experts in pipe freezing and live pipework

Bishop Pipe Freezing

Pipe Freezing Services

Bishop Pipe Freezing are international pioneers in on-site pipe freezing, delivering safe, controlled isolation of live pipework without draining systems or shutting operations down.

We work on pipe sizes from ½” (15mm) to 24” (600mm), at pressures up to 250 bar and temperatures up to 200°C, across the UK and internationally.

Whether it’s a critical industrial installation or a small but urgent facilities issue, pipe freezing allows work to be completed quickly, safely, and with minimal disruption.

What is pipe freezing?

Pipe freezing is a controlled process where liquid nitrogen is applied to a section of pipe using specialist jackets. This forms a temporary ice plug, stopping flow long enough for maintenance, repair or modification to take place.

Once work is complete, the freeze is safely released and the system returned to service – without draining, refilling, or shutting down entire systems.

When is pipe freezing the right solution?

Pipe freezing is ideal when:

  • Draining a system would be time-consuming or disruptive
  • Shutting down operations is not possible
  • Systems are critical to safety, compliance or continuity
  • Water loss, chemical use or re-commissioning risk needs to be avoided

It is routinely used for:

  • Emergency repairs
  • Valve replacement
  • System modifications
  • Planned maintenance
  • Live system upgrades

Common problems pipe freezing solves

Legionella control & dead leg removal

Pipe freezing enables safe dead leg removal without draining whole systems, reducing Legionella risk.

Emergency repairs without shutdown

When failures occur on live systems, pipe freezing enables rapid isolation and repair while keeping buildings operational.

Valve replacement without draining

Old or failed valves can be replaced without draining large systems, saving time, water and cost.

Work on critical or complex systems

Pipe freezing is often the only viable option where shutdown would be unsafe, impractical or prohibitively expensive.

Why Bishop Pipe Freezing?

Over 50 years of specialist experience

Established in 1972, Bishop Pipe Freezing is one of the most experienced pipe freezing providers in the world.

We provide a complete end-to-end solution, including pipe cutting, valve installation and all associated works – not just the freeze itself.

We pioneered the use of super-insulated vacuum hoses in the UK, allowing safe transfer of liquid nitrogen over distances of up to 50 metres. This enables work in confined or difficult locations without bringing nitrogen vessels close to the work area.

Our specialist jackets and processes allow us to work at pressures up to 200 bar and temperatures up to 200°C, safely and reliably.

FAQs

Can pipe freezing be used on hot water systems?

Yes. Bishop Pipe Freezing regularly carries out freezes on hot water systems, including high-temperature applications.

When carried out by experienced specialists using the correct equipment and procedures, pipe freezing is a proven and safe method used worldwide for critical systems.

From ½” (15mm) domestic pipework up to 24” (600mm) industrial systems.

Pipe freezing is not suitable for all materials [due to the risk of brittle fracture] or flow conditions. We will always assess suitability and advise honestly if an alternative method is required.
